How to Spot the IT That Is Quietly Holding You Back

6 min read

Most businesses only look at their technology when something breaks. A quick, honest review once in a while catches the weak spots first — the slow, aging, or half-forgotten pieces that are quietly costing you time and risk.

You do not need to be technical to do a useful first pass. Walk through these areas and note anything that feels slow, old, or uncertain.

Your devices

How old are the computers your team uses? Are they slow enough that people wait on them? Aging machines cost real productivity long before they fail outright — and when one does fail, it is always at a bad time. Note anything limping along.

Your network and Wi-Fi

Is the internet fast and stable, or are there daily complaints and dead spots? Slow, patchy connectivity taxes everyone all day. If your network grew by accident over the years, it is a common hidden bottleneck.

Your backups

Ask the uncomfortable question: if a computer or server died today, what would you lose, and how long would recovery take? If you are not certain, that uncertainty is the finding. Confirm backups are running, off-site, and actually restorable.

Your accounts and access

Who has access to what? Are there old accounts for people who have left, or shared logins nobody has changed in years? Access that has crept out of control is both a security risk and an administrative mess waiting to happen.

Your security basics

Is anti-malware installed and current on every machine? Is two-factor authentication on for important accounts? Are systems being updated? These are the doors attackers rely on being left open.

Your software and subscriptions

List the tools and services you pay for. It is common to find duplicates, things nobody uses anymore, or gaps where a manual process is eating time that a tool could save.

What to do with what you find

You will usually end up with a short list: a couple of aging machines, a backup you are not sure about, some access to tidy up. Rank them by risk and cost, fix the urgent ones, and plan the rest. The value of the exercise is simply seeing the whole picture — so you are improving your technology deliberately instead of reacting to the next thing that breaks. If you would like a professional set of eyes on it, that is what an IT health check provides.
