Domain Names: A Quick-Start Guide for Businesses

5 min read

Your domain name is your address on the internet — the thing people type, remember, and trust. It is also one of the first things you should lock down when starting or rebranding a business, before someone else does.

Choosing a good domain

A domain does not need to be clever. It needs to be easy to say, easy to spell, and hard to get wrong. A few practical rules:

  • Keep it short and simple — if you have to spell it out loud, reconsider.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers where you can; they cause confusion.
  • Match your business name so people can find you the obvious way.
  • Pick the right ending — .ca signals a Canadian business, .com is the familiar default. Many businesses register both.

Register sooner rather than later

Good domains get taken. If you have a business name in mind — even for something you will launch later — registering the domain is cheap insurance against finding it gone when you are ready. It is far easier to hold a domain than to negotiate for one someone else grabbed first.

Protect what you register

A couple of small habits save future grief: keep your domain set to auto-renew so it never lapses by accident, and keep the contact details on it current. An expired domain can take your website and email down with it, and recovering a lapsed domain is not always straightforward.

Let someone manage the boring parts

Registration, renewals, and DNS settings are simple in theory and fiddly in practice. We register and manage domains for our customers — you tell us the name you want, we check it, register it in your name, and handle the DNS and renewals so it quietly does its job. Tell us the name you have in mind and we will take it from there.

We handle this for you
